When upgrading your guest WiFi system, it is not enough to simply get a faster modem and a “Gigabit” speed controller. While modem & controller speeds are vital, they alone will not improve the surfing experience for the guests. You must also improve the throughput capacity of your network of Access Points.
The ability of the access points to deliver more speed and a solid connection to the guest’s devices is an equally (sometimes more) important part of the chain as the modem and controller. Make it a priority to also improve your wireless network so you can actually deliver that faster speed to the guest’s devices.
There are four key things to consider about your network of Access Points:
- Type of Access Points: It is vital to employ the latest dual-band AP that broadcast in both the 2.4 Ghz and 5.8 Ghz frequency bands. Most of your guest’s devices want to connect on the much faster 5.8Ghz frequency band, providing them the faster speeds for gaming and streaming.
- Number of Wired Access Points: The total throughput capacity of the controller will be limited to the total throughput capacity of your access points that are connected to the controller with a wire. Supporting a wireless MESH network of access points with sufficient wired anchor points is key.
- Density of access points: The amount of devices that an AP can support is limited, and guests will have multiple WiFi devices. Be sure to have no more than 10 rooms, RV’s, cabins or boat slips served by any single access point.
- Proximity of access points: WiFi is a two-way radio communication, and your AP’s “range” is limited to the range of the client’s device. Tablets & phones are often limited to ~100 foot of range, so do not place your access points farther than 100 feet from your guest’s cabin or RV!!
